Longevity and Healthspan

Todays update is about Longevity and Healthspan.

Like many of you, I used to think why would I want to live to 100 or beyond. Just look at those people they show on the news celebrating 100 or 110. That doesn’t look appealing to me. I have now changed how I feel about that. I now plan on making it to see the turn of the next century. YES! You read that correctly. January 1st, 2100 I will be 132 years old. Scientists are now predicting that a 50 year old male today with no major health issues can make it to 150. This isn’t just a number they are after, they are looking at quality of life. Still functional, productive and enjoying life. 

Over the past 2 decades since the human genome project was completed scientists like Horvath, Sinclair, Longo and other brilliant minds have undertaken projects at some of the most prestigious universities in this country to figure out what causes aging and how to slow it down or even reverse it. 

We now know that aging is the single biggest contributing factor (or common denominator ) to illnesses such as cancer, cognitive decline, organ failure, metabolic disease, joint and back pain due to inflammation, this list could go on and on. Instead of focusing on these individual parts of the puzzle or systems (sickcare model) we need to change our focus to a whole system approach. A complex approach. 

Scientists have discovered some amazing things about this process of aging.  The one thing all agree on is, there is no one thing that causes aging or can slow it down. The consensus is that it will take a multi-pronged (complex) approach to slow and reverse the aging process. I know this may sound unbelievable to some of you. We are currently at a place in history where a huge paradigm shift is occurring. Much like when the Wright brothers first flew or when Roger Bannister broke the 4 minute mile, men walking on the moon. There are more examples of these break-throughs in history but these are 3 easy ones that come to mind, that now look like no big deal. That is the kind of shift that is already occurring among the scientists in charge of these studies and those that are paying attention. The executives at most companies in Silicon Valley have been following this for years. 

Through studies they have been able to speed up the rate of aging in mice models and then slow it back down. They have damaged DNA in precise places and watched how fast aging has occurred. They have also studies how Stem cells, Sirtuans and other intracellular components react to these insults to our DNA. 

The amount of books and studies coming out is enough to make your head spin. What I have done is dedicated my self to bringing you the information you need so you can make this one life an incredible experience. For that to happen we need to optimize the entire system so it can better handle the constant barrage of daily DNA damage that starts the minute we are born. 

Just to give you an example, each day our bodies create 1X10 to 22 power free-radicals that’s 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. Taking anti-oxidants isn’t going to cut it. Anti-oxidant sales continue in the millions of dollars every year, despite scientists stating they barely make an impact. Anti-oxidants act upon free radicals on a 1 to 1 basis. In other words one anti-oxidant molecule will take out one free radical. Taking a complex whole systems approach we can improve the bodies detoxification system to be better able to handle this onslaught. This is just a piece of the puzzle.
