Be Still

By now most you have heard, read about or know someone who has been to a float studio. Yesterday was my second time and I have to admit it was much better the second time. Partially, because I knew what to expect this time, but mostly because of how well thought out and designed Be Still Float Studio in Jacksonville is.

From the moment you walk in the air feels cleaner. When you step to the back it is like being transported to one of the most peaceful places you can imagine. The staff is super welcoming. They really make you feel comfortable. After settling in, I was taken to a room with the best massage chair I have ever had the pleasure of sitting in. They also offer guided meditations with virtual reality. I will definitely try that next time I go.

Then after the massage, I headed over to the sound table. This table with a pillow placed on top of you creates sound waves and healing vibrations. This may have been my favorite part of the whole experience. One of the purposes of meditation is to bring your brain out of beta waves and into alpha waves. This table helps synchronize your mind and body. When my session ended I knew I wasn’t asleep but I was definitely disconnected from the outside world at this point.

Now on to the float. The room itself was comfortable and I was given clear instructions on how everything worked. I took a shower and stepped in. I had easy access to sound and light from inside the tank. I shut everything down. There was no light at all in my room. I couldn’t tell if my eyes were open or closed. Great job with that! The other float studio I had been to had light still coming into the tank.

Already feeling relaxed from the chair and the sound table, after shutting off all the lights and floating completely effortlessly, falling back into an alpha wave brain pattern was easy. The first couple on minutes my brain was still trying to make sense of it all. After repeating to myself there is no place I have to be, there is nothing I need to do and taking a few deep breathes, my body drifted weightlessly away. The only thing still ON was my nervous system. That is an amazing place. You can follow your thoughts, see them go by like clouds, change them, guide them. It’s all under your control. Or you can just follow your breathe. When the lights came gently back on after 60 minutes my first thought was, already. I felt I had been transported to some incredibly peaceful place in this great universe and I had just been pulled back to Earth when those lights came back on.

I took another shower, got dressed and headed out to a fantastic dinner feeling a different type of energy running through my body. I was relaxed and rejuvenated.

Here is a list of just some of the benefits of floating.

  • Reduces STRESS
  • Reduces anxiety and depression
  • Reduces pain and inflammation
  • Reduces blood pressure and pulse rate
  • Reduces Cortisol
  • Helps calibrate many of the bodies clocks including circadian rhythm
  • Increases Dopamine
  • Increases neurogenesis
  • Increases creativity and memory consolidation
  • Decompresses the spine and joints

All of this plus a general sense of well being that you can’t get from anything else. I highly recommend visiting a float studio near you. If you are in the Jacksonville area you have to visit Be Still Float Studio.
